Pittsburgh Steelers Cut Another Key Veteran in…

The Pittsburgh Steelers are clearly revamping their roster with an eye toward getting younger, as another Steeler stalwart, James Farrior, was cut today.

Earlier this week the Steelers let go of 14-year veteran Hines Ward, 13-year pro Aaron Smith and 11-year guard Chris Kemoeatu. Ward, Smith and Kemoeatu spent their entire careers in Pittsburgh, while Farrior has been a part of the team since he left the Jets after the 2001 season.

Farrior, a linebacker out of the University of Virginia, had 30.5 sacks and 1080 tackles in the steel city and only missed six games in the 10 years he was a member of the team. He was a two-time Pro Bowl selection as well as a two-time All-Pro. He was named the Pittsburgh Steelers Most Valuable Player in 2004.

When the season ended, the Miami Sun Sentinel estimated that the Steelers had $150 million committed to salaries for the 2012-2013 season, the most in the league. This year’s cap figure will be roughly $125 million so Pittsburgh was forced to jettison veterans.

All three men were key components of the Steelers two most recent Super Bowl titles in 2005 and 2008 with Ward winning the MVP in 2005. They also were a part of the team that lost to Green Bay in the 2010 Super Bowl.

The moves will surely shake up a roster and an organization that has been one of the most dominant in the league for the past decade, in large part because they retain veterans and keep continuity in their system.

The Steelers are now faced with the daunting task of replacing three starters, plus Smith, through either free agency or the draft. The draft will be their better option as free agents can be expensive and they are already up against the cap.

Pittsburgh will select at the 24th spot in this year’s draft in April.

Pittsburgh Steelers Will Try To Tender And Not…

Pittsburgh Steelers Will Try To Tender And Not…

Mike Wallace Could Tender with Pittsburgh Steelers Front Office

Mike Wallace won’t be receiving a franchise tag from the Pittsburgh Steelers after all, inside sources for the team say the Steelers’ front office will not, not franchise their sought after free agent.

Because the team won’t franchise tag Wallace the Steelers in turn will be able to match any offers from other potential suitors or receive a first-round pick in return for his services.

According to ESPN:

“The highest qualifying offer for Wallace is about $2.75 million, nearly matching the amount that Pittsburgh is now under the salary cap. To franchise Wallace would cost Pittsburgh $9.5 million, which it currently does not have the salary-cap space to absorb.”

GM Kevin Colbert told reporters at last weeks combine that he was determined to keep the wide receiver. Colbert said it was his belief that Wallace wants to stay in Pittsburgh and they will work together to make sure that goal is realized.

While both sides would like to see a deal get done Wallace last week told SiriusXM NFL Radio:

“[Pittsburgh is] where I would like to be, but we all know that it is a business and you have certain things you have to handle. So if I have to go elsewhere, you know Pittsburgh will always be in my heart, but I have to do what I have to do.”

Letting Wallace go would deal a blow to the Steelers organization after he received for 1,193 yards last season with eight touchdowns, good enough to get the wide receiver selected to his first Pro Bowl appearance.

Wallace has led the Pittsburgh Steelers in receiving touchdowns the past two seasons while tying for the team’s best during his rookie year.

Do you think letting Mike Wallace go would be a big mistake on behalf of the Pittsburgh Steelers front office?

Report: Pittsburgh Steelers Do Not Plan To…

The Pittsburgh Steelers do not intend to franchise tag wide receiver Mike Wallace, sources have told ESPN.

They instead intend to tender him, ESPN reports, which would allow another team to attempt to sign him to an offer sheet. The Steelers would have the right to match any offer, and if they decline, they could receive a first round pick in return.

Last week, Steelers general manager Mike Colbert said that he would like Wallace to stay with the club his entire career.

“We’re going to do everything we can to make sure Mike Wallace remains a Pittsburgh Steeler.” Colbert told ProFootballTalk, “And I think that’s Mike’s hope as well. Usually when you have two parties that share the same goal, it’s easier to achieve that goal.”

This past season he had 72 receptions for 1,193 yards and scored eight touchdowns. Throughout his career with the Steelers he has had 181 receptions for 3,206 yards and has scored 24 total touchdowns.

That’s all for today.

Pittsburgh Steelers GM determined to keep Mike…

By Jeff Zrebiec

12:39 p.m. EST, February 23, 2012

There has been plenty of speculation that the Ravens could be interested in Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Mike Wallace, who will be an unrestricted free agent if the Steelers don’t put the franchise tag on him by March 5.

The Steelers are reportedly leaning toward placing a first-round restricted tender on Wallace, which means that another team — willing to give up their first-round pick as compensation and with the right amount of cap space to afford an extension for the receiver — could acquire Wallace.

Of course, the Ravens have been mentioned as a possibility because they are looking to upgrade at the wide receiver position, they have a late first-round pick and they’d probably like nothing more than to take the Steelers’ top playmaker off their offense.

Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome is very protective of high draft picks and his team doesn’t have too much cap space, so I’ve thought all along that this is a long shot.

And from what it sounds like, the Steelers, who have some cap problems of their own, are prepared to do what it takes to keep Wallace.

“Mike is a restricted free agent,” Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert said at today’s NFL Combine. “I’m pretty sure that he’s going to be protected with a first-round pick at minimum. There’s always the franchise possibility. We’re going to do everything we can to make sure that Mike Wallace remains a Pittsburgh Steeler and I think that’s Mike’s belief as well. Usually when you have two parties that share the same goal, it’s easier to achieve that goal.”

Ga. DUI charges against Steelers' Ward dropped

DECATUR, Ga. (AP) — Prosecutors have dropped DUI charges against Pittsburgh Steelers receiver and Dancing With the Stars winner Hines Ward.

DeKalb County Prosecutor Sonja N. Brown said Wednesday that Ward pleaded guilty to reckless driving and was given a year on probation. She says he also was fined $2,000 and must do 80 hours of community service. He also must undergo alcohol evaluation.

The 35-year-old Super Bowl XL MVP was arrested last year after he failed to maintain his lane and hit a curb. He failed several field sobriety tests and was booked into the DeKalb County jail and later released on bond.

Ward used to be a primary receiving target but last season wasn’t used as much. He has two years remaining on his deal and has said he’s willing to restructure it to finish his career with Pittsburgh.

Steelers hoping for help in test with Browns

Ben Roethlisberger Expected To Start Week 17…

Read More: Ben Roethlisberger (QB – PIT), Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns

The Pittsburgh Steelers are playing the Cleveland Browns in Week 17 and they should have Ben Roethlisberger available. The Steelers QB missed Week 16 with a high ankle sprain but the Pittsburgh Post Gazette reports that he was a full participant in Friday’s practice and is expected to start against Cleveland.

That’s good news for the Steelers who still have something to play for. They’ve clinched a playoff spot but still have a shot at securing a division title, first round bye and even perhaps home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

If the Steelers beat the Browns, and the Cincinnati Bengals beat the Baltimore Ravens, the Steelers would win the AFC North and receive the No. 2 seed in the AFC playoffs. Without that No. 2 seed, they will be the fifth seed without a first round bye. The Steelers can even secure the No. 1 overall seed and home field advantage throughout the playoffs if they win and both the Ravens and New England Patriots lose.

So the Steelers have plenty to play for, which means Roethlisberger will be out there. Previous reports indicated that they may get him just 25-30 snaps so he’s not rusty entering the playoffs.

If Roethlisberger can’t go, or comes out, Charlie Batch would replace him.

Roethlisberger Should Not Play Sunday Against…

Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin is saying that he is optimistic that Ben Roethlisberger will be able to start against the Cleveland Browns for the final week of the season. That noise you hear now is every Steelers fan letting out a resounding “why?”

It was debatable whether Roethlisberger should play against the San Francisco 49ers two weeks ago but after the Ravens lost it made sense. After Roethlisberger looked terrible, looked injured and the 49ers defense destroyed him it made less sense to start him last week. Now after the Steelers won without Roethlisberger last week it seems to make no sense for Roethlisberger to start this week.

The Steelers have a chance to win the AFC North, which means a first round bye in the playoffs and the Steelers could even slip into the first seed overall and get home field throughout the playoffs. Obviously everybody would prefer to get the first round bye but not if it means risking Roethlisberger’s health and costing the Steelers a trip to the Super Bowl. The Steelers can go to the Super Bowl if they are the five seed. They can’t go to the Super Bowl if Roethlisberger is injured.

Benching Roethlisberger doesn’t guarantee that the Steelers give up the division either. Last week the Steelers not only won without Roethlisberger but they won by a score of 27-0. They did it the way that Pittsburgh traditionally wins, running and defense. Sure, their opponent was the St. Louis Rams who are currently in the running for the Andrew Luck sweepstakes. The Cleveland Browns aren’t exactly Super Bowl contenders either though.

The Browns are playing without their starting quarterback Colt McCoy-who has been out since suffering a concussion after a hit from James Harrison in the two teams’ last meeting-and their offense only ranks 29th in the league. The Steelers’ defense also seems to step up when Roethlisberger doesn’t play. Last week the defense shut out the Rams and last season when Roethlisberger missed four games the defense only allowed 12.5 points per game against four teams that had a combined record of 41-23 by the end of the season.

The offense won’t be completely the same if Roethlisberger doesn’t play but it won’t be bad either. Cleveland’s defense ranks 10th in the NFL but that is largely because of a pass defense that ranks 2nd in the NFL. Cleveland’s rush defense is actually only 30th in the NFL and not far off from the Rams defense that the Steelers ran all over last week.

The Steelers can beat the Browns even if Roethlisberger doesn’t play and then their fate lies in the hands of the Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals game. The Bengals game will be much tougher for the Ravens. Besides the fact that the Ravens choke in big situations, you also have a Bengals team that will be pumped to hold on to their playoff spot. If the Bengals win they clinch only their third playoff spot in 20 years. The game is also in Cincinnati where the stadium has sold out for only the second time this year.

The Steelers should rest Roethlisberger one more week and it’s possible Pittsburgh still gets the first round bye. Even if the Ravens win and the Steelers are the fifth seed every Steelers fan has faith that Roethlisberger can navigate the Steelers through the playoffs one more time. Nobody has faith that Charlie Batch can do it if Roethlisberger plays and makes his ankle worse.

Ben Roethlisberger Could Play Against Browns:…

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a lot to play for in Week 17. They are currently 11-4 and tied with the Baltimore Ravens for first place in the AFC North. Baltimore owns the tiebreaker but faces a tough Week 17 test against the Cincinnati Bengals. Meanwhile, the Steelers have a trip to face the Cleveland Browns. If the Steelers win and the Ravens lose, Pittsburgh will win the division and earn a bye. That’s not out of the realm of possibility. Pittsburgh could get a big boost if quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is able to play.

Roethlisberger has been dealing with an injured ankle since the last time his team faced the Browns. That was all the way back on Thursday, December 8. Roethlisberger played in the following game against the San Francisco 49ers but was visibly limited. He sat out in Week 16 as his team drilled the lowly St. Louis Rams. Now, the hope is that his high ankle sprain is rested enough to allow him to play in the game. That could be a huge boost for a team hoping to win the division. Roethlisberger will be watched closely throughout the week but there is a real chance he can play. If that happens, beating the Browns should be no problem for the Steelers.

Roethlisberger has been pretty solid in the 2011 season. After a rough start he has bounced back to throw 21 touchdown passes and 14 interceptions. Big Ben has struggled against elite defenses but Cleveland doesn’t really fit that bill. The Browns are in the midst of a disastrous 2011 season and would have a hard time winning this game no matter who was under center for the Steelers.

Pittsburgh might ultimately decide to rest Roethlisberger another week if he is still hobbled. Their playoff spot is secure and Pittsburgh has been able to win on the road in the playoffs before. If it is in the best interest of the team to not risk Roethlisberger’s health, they won’t do it. Pittsburgh knows it is good enough to be successful in the playoffs on the road as well as at home. If Big Ben can play, he will. But if he is still sore, I expect the Steelers will rest him.

Ailing Steelers hope to get well at Rams’ expense

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger out with…

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will not start Saturday when the Steelers face the St. Louis Rams.

Roethlisberger is dealing with a sprained left ankle and did not practice this week following a 20-3 loss to San Francisco on Monday. He will be replaced by veteran Charlie Batch, who is 4-2 as a spot starter since joining the Steelers in 2003.

Roethlisberger said Wednesday he would prefer to play and believed his ankle was in pretty good shape after throwing for 330 yards and three interceptions against the 49ers. Yet he watched both practices this week in sweat pants as Batch took the snaps with the first team.

Roethlisberger last missed a start due to injury in 2009, when a concussion forced him to sit out a loss to Baltimore.

Pittsburgh Steelers Injury Report, Week 16:…

Read More: Emmanuel Sanders (WR – PIT), Pittsburgh Steelers, St. Louis Rams

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders doesn’t know “100 percent” if he’ll play Saturday against the St. Louis Rams, reports Scott Brown of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. The second-year man has a sore right foot stemming from a surgical procedure he had on it following Pittsburgh’s loss to the Green Bay Packers in the Super Bowl.

“The most important thing is that I’m there for the playoffs and 100 percent,” Sanders said, according to Brown. “Don’t want this injury to be lingering.”

It seems that Pittsburgh will take a conservative approach with regard to Sanders’ injury. Brown guesses it will rest Sanders on Saturday, while Steelers Depot believes Sanders will miss Pittsburgh’s regular-season finale against the Cleveland Browns as well.

Sanders, 28, has recorded 21 catches for 271 yards and two touchdowns in the 2011 campaign. He hasn’t played since Dec. 4 against the Kansas City Chiefs, in which he caught one pass for six yards.

Pittsburgh Steelers Injury Report, Week 16: Ben…

Read More: Charlie Batch (QB – PIT), Ben Roethlisberger (QB – PIT), Mewelde Moore (RB – PIT), LaMarr Woodley (LB – PIT), Maurkice Pouncey (C – PIT), Emmanuel Sanders (WR – PIT), Curtis Brown (DB – PIT), Pittsburgh Steelers, St. Louis Rams

The Pittsburgh Steelers are facing the St. Louis Rams this weekend as they hope to bounce back from a disappointing performance on national television, but their bigger opponent in the short-term may be themselves. Injuries have been piling up amongst the Steelers’ key players, with the most notable being star quarterback Ben Roethlisberger’s high ankle sprain.

Reports say that the team doesn’t expect Roethlisberger to start against St. Louis, so they may be forced to go with Charlie Batch as they try to build some momentum for the postseason. Pittsburgh’s full injury report can be found here, but it’s shown below:

Did Not Participate

- QB Ben Roethlisberger

- LB LaMarr Woodley

- RB Mewelde Moore

- DB Curtis Brown

Limited Participation

- C Maurkice Pouncey

- WR Emmanuel Sanders

The big names to focus on here are Roethlisberger, Woodley and Pouncey. Roethlisberger isn’t expected to play, but both Woodley and Pouncey are expected to be on the field against St. Louis. They’ll likely play less than usual, though, as the team tries to get healthier for the playoffs.
